License Requirements

Requirements to Obtaining your License.

All electrical work in Georgia requires a license.

  • Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
  • A separate Georgia Business and Law exam is not required to be passed.
  • An applicant must be 21 yeas old and be able to document 4 years of experience.
  • If you should fail the exam twice, you must complete a state approved training course before testing again

Work that can be Done Under this License

An Electrical Contractor license allows for the installation, maintenance, alteration, or repair of any electrical equipment, apparatus, control system, or electrical wiring device which is attached to or incorporated into any building or structure including the bidding and contracting for such work. It does not include Low Voltage work.

  • Class 1 - Restricted Electrical Contractor who is limited to single-phase electrical installations, which do not exceed 400 amperes from the service drop or service lateral.
  • Class 2 - Unrestricted Electrical Contractor who is not limited as to the size or amount of work allowed

Applications for a License

Applying to get your License

To apply, contact the state of Georgia at 1-478-207-2440. A nonrefundable fee of $30.00 must be submitted with application. The application must be submitted to the Board at least 60 days before the next scheduled exam date. Applicants should receive an approval letter approximately 30 days prior to the exam. After the exam, passing candidates will receive their licenses in approximately six weeks.

Reciprocity

Reciprocity Agreements

Alabama, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina for the Electrical Contractor and an agreement for the Class 1 Restricted Electrical Contractor with Florida's Residential Electrical Specialist License.

Examination

Exam Details

  • The testing company is AMP (1-800-345-6559)
  • Only offered three times per year and open book
  • 140 questions and an 8-hour time limit
  • The exam is divided into two parts with 4 hours for each half. Thirty questions are Business and Law type questions and 110 are technical questions. It is all multiple-choice.
  • 70% is required to pass the exam
  • The exam fee is $143.
